Chesterton went about his business unaware that the witch had changed him into a donkey. That morning he dressed in his best suit, placed his favorite fedora cockeyed upon his head, and went to meet the usual acquaintances for Sunday brunch.
Ignoring the strange looks cast his way by Todd and Marlene, Chesterton took a seat next to a stunning blonde he had never seen before. “Todd,” he asked, “aren’t you going to introduce me to the new member of our brunch party?”
Todd was startled when the donkey began to speak, but when he recognized Chesterton’s voice, the entire situation became clear. “Of course, Chesterton,” said Todd, “this is Sophie. Marlene’s friend.”
Chesterton used his hoof to lift Sophie’s hand. “Enchanted, mademoiselle.”
Sophie was not surprised to be having brunch next to a donkey. She’d read about this kind of thing before: this poor man would remain in such an awkward state until a good-hearted woman saw past the big ears and buckteeth and gave him a kiss. This was her opportunity to prove that she was the most gracious woman in the city. She turned to Chesterton, grabbed his big donkey ears and pressed her lips to his. Suddenly shoots of light began erupting from the donkey, and after a series of soft popping sounds, Chesterton appeared at the table, un-transmogrified.
“I did it!” shouted Sophie as she picked up her cell phone and dialed her publicist.
Chesterton reached down and picked up his hat, which had been knocked off during the transformation. “My hat!” he shouted. “Who knocked off my hat? I want to speak to the manager!” He stood, grabbed a server by the arm, and headed for the manager’s office.
“It didn’t work,” said Marlene, as Sophie hung up the phone.
“What do you mean?” Sophie asked. “He’s human again.”
“Yeah, but he’s still an ass.”
